Stefan Lainer extends Borussia contract until 2026

Borussia have extended Stefan Lainer’s contract, which was due to expire on 30th June, until 30th June 2026.

“Stevie has been with us for five years and has always been a model professional with his hard work and mentality,” said managing director for sport Roland Virkus. “We’re very pleased that he’s here to stay as one of the experienced players in the squad.”

“I love playing for Borussia,” Stefan Lainer said. “Last season wasn’t easy, for me personally and for the club. I’m now really looking forward to repaying the trust they’ve put in me and giving everything so that we can improve from last season.”

Lainer joined Borussia from RB Salzburg in summer 2019 and immediately established himself as a key part of the side. He made 84 competitive appearances over his first two seasons for the Foals, scoring three times. Lainer missed several games with injury during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, when he made 48 Bundesliga and three DFB-Pokal appearances, scoring once. At the start of last season, Lainer was diagnosed with lymphoma and therefore missed approximately half a year. He fought his way back though, and played 15 Bundesliga games and one DFB-Pokal match for Borussia in the second half of the campaign.

Lainer made a total of 15 appearances for the youth teams (U19, U18, U17 and U16) of his home country of Austria between 2006 and 2010. The right-back was called up to the senior squad in March 2017 and made his international debut in a 1-1 friendly draw with Finland. He has since picked up a total of 39 caps so far, finding the net twice.
