Internationals: Elvedi and Wöber draw in St. Gallen

Switzerland and Austria played out a 1-1 draw in the final round of friendlies before EURO 2024 gets underway, with Nico Elvedi and Max Wöber both featuring for their countries. Joe Scally started for the USA against Colombia, but was unable to prevent his side suffering a heavy defeat in Maryland.

Switzerland extended their unbeaten run to four matches by drawing 1-1 with Austria in St. Gallen. Nico Elvedi (photo: imago images/Langer) played the full 90 minutes on the right side of a back three. Max Wöber came on as a substitute midway through the second half, by which point the score was already 1-1. Christoph Baumgartner gave the visitors an early lead at the Kybunpark, before Mainz’s Silvan Widmer brought Switzerland level in the 26th minute. The Swiss start their European Championship campaign with a clash against Hungary in Cologne next Saturday (15:00 CEST), while Austria’s first game will see them face a strong French side the following Monday (21:00 CEST).

The USMNT’s preparations for the Copa America got off to a rocky start, meanwhile, as a strong attacking performance from Colombia condemned them to a 5-1 thrashing at Commanders Field. Jhon Arias and Rafael Santos Borré gave the visitors a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes, before the US threatened to stage a comeback with a Timothy Weah strike just before the hour mark. The visitors proved to be too strong for the Stars and Stripes, however, scoring three late goals through Richard Ríos, Jorge Carrascal and Luis Sinisterra to cruise to a comfortable victory. The US host Brazil in Orlando on Tuesday night (1:00 CEST).
