Borussia sign Fabio Chiarodia from Werder Bremen
Borussia Mönchengladbach have signed centre-back Fabio Chiarodia from SV Werder Bremen. The 18-year-old Italy U19 international has signed a contract until 30th June 2027.
“Fabio Chiarodia is one of the greatest talents in his position in Germany. He has shown just how good he is for his age, not least in the game against us at BORUSSIA-PARK,” said Borussia’s sporting director Roland Virkus. “We are convinced that we will benefit greatly from him.” Fabio Chiarodia said, “I am looking forward to playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach. I want to give my best for this great and historic club and develop myself in the process. The club is very welcoming and I think the overall package fits me very well, both as a person and a footballer.”
The Italy international, who was born in Oldenburg, was in the VfL Oldenburg academy and moved to the youth system at SV Werder Bremen in 2014. The centre-back moved up to the U17s in the 2020/21 season and played in five games in the B-Junioren-Bundesliga North/Northeast, in which he scored one goal. In the following season, Chiarodia made eight appearances in the U19 Bundesliga North/Northeast, scoring one goal and making one assist. He also made one appearance each for the U19s in the youth DFB-Pokal, the U23s in the Regionalliga North and the first team in the 2. Bundesliga.
First Bundesliga start at BORUSSIA-PARK
Chiarodia appeared for Werder’s U23s nine times in the Regionalliga North during the 2022/23 season. He also appeared for the newly promoted Werder’s senior side once in the DFB-Pokal and three times in the league. After two short substitute appearances against SC Freiburg and VfL Bochum, Chiarodia celebrated his first start in the Bundesliga on matchday 25 – in the 2-2 draw against the Foals at BORUSSIA-PARK in Mönchengladbach.
Fabio Chiarodia is also an Italy U19 international. He has appeared seven times for the ‘Squadra Azzurra‘ U19 team, in three friendlies as well as four qualifying games for the U19 EUROs. Chiarodia has also been called up to the final squad for the tournament itself, which will take place from 3rd until 16th July in Malta. The centre-back has played a further 20 times in youth internationals (U17 and U15), scoring twice.
