#BMGKOE: Match reaction

After the Foals’ 3-3 draw against 1. FC Köln, we have the reactions of Robin Hack, Julian Weigl, managing director for sport Roland Virkus and the two head coaches Gerardo Seoane and Timo Schultz.

Robin Hack: It’s really painful to have turned the game around and then still conceded the equaliser. I was ecstatic about my goal to make it 3-2. I don’t know if I’ve ever been that emotional whilst celebrating. I hoped we’d hold on to the lead, but I felt like afterwards we were pushing too hard for another goal. We then lost the ball once or twice and allowed Köln to get back into the game. The Köln player did well for the goal that made it 3-3, but we shouldn’t have let that happen. We really wanted to win the derby, but after how the game went, a point is okay.

Julian Weigl: That was a wild ride with a lot of emotion. We were behind twice and worked hard to turn the tide in our favour. We could taste the win after going 3-2 up and were close to turning the game completely in our favour. However, we should have just defended the lead to get over the line. We really wanted to win. Sadly, that didn’t happen. That’s why we’re disappointed that the game ended in a draw.

Managing director for sport Roland Virkus: You have to hand it to the team in that they really wanted to win the derby. When you manage to turn a game around and lead 3-2, you have to get over the line. We were too frantic afterwards and couldn’t take control of the game. The positive thing is that the team came back brilliantly after going behind. The negative thing is that we made individual errors which led to goals.

Head coach Gerardo Seoane: It was a thrilling and entertaining derby with a lot of emotion. We created a lot of chances but weren’t clinical enough in our finishing. We also didn’t defend well enough in certain situations. We lost a bit of compactness in some phases, because we ourselves had put our foot on the gas. One of the positives to take from this match is that the team came back again and again, came from behind twice and played attacking football until the end. We are however disappointed at the end, because we didn’t manage to win the derby for the fans.

Head coach Timo Schultz (1. FC Köln): I think that the spectators saw a real spectacle today. As coaches, we also saw a lot of things that we weren’t as happy with. We had our best game in an attacking sense since I’ve been Köln head coach- We created a lot of chances and had good periods of possession. We were however too open defensively and had a lot of problems in wide areas. Both teams were consistently dangerous, and at the end of the day, 3-3 is okay.
