Keane slams ‘stupid’ Man Utd player as Wright picks out Ten Hag selection error

Roy Keane has criticised Man Utd midfielder Fred for his role in Man City’s winning goal as the Citizens beat the Red Devils 2-1 in the FA Cup final on Saturday,

The eyes of the footballing world were on Wembley as these rivals went toe-to-toe in a major cup final for the first time on Saturday afternoon.

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring with a stunning volley after 12 seconds, with Bruno Fernandes’ penalty cancelling out the quickest goal in FA Cup final history.

But City regained the lead through , giving them a chance to emulate United’s 1999 treble heroes in next weekend’s Champions League final.

Man Utd boss after a loss and season where the lack of quality and depth compared to treble-chasing Man City has been clear.

And Man Utd legend Keane was unhappy at Fred for fouling Kevin de Bruyne in the build-up to City’s winning goal on Saturday.

“Fred had Kevin de Bruyne where he wants him,” Keane told ITV Football. “De Bruyne has his back to goal and then Fred fouls him.

“It’s the height of stupidity… But we’ve seen that from him so many times over the years.”

Fellow pundit Ian Wright thought Man Utd were “quite tepid” against City and thought the impact of substitute Alejandro Garnacho showed he should’ve started.

“I thought Manchester City were just very efficient,” Wright added.

“I thought we would see more from Manchester United. They improved after Garnacho came on and he definitely should have started the game for me. He proved he had a little bit more thrust about him.

“Other than that, Manchester City were in total control really. It was quite tepid from United in the end.”

Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel thinks the “future looks really bright” at Old Trafford despite the disappointing loss to City.

“The season has been really good, though. Think back to the first two games of the season and it didn’t look great but United have won a trophy and finishing third.

“Erik ten Hag has taken away 10 years of uncertainty and the future looks really bright.”
