On Wednesday, 12.07.2023, 1. FC Union Berlin will play their first friendly of the season away against Regionalliga side FSV Luckenwalde. Kick off at the Werner-Seelenbinder-Stadion is at 18:30.

The opponents

Fußballsportverein 63 Luckenwalde e. V., are not a wholly unknown opponent for their Bundesliga guests, as the two sides have already played pre-season friendlies before the 2004/05, 2005/06 and 2016/17 seasons.

In addition, their respective youth departments have been working closely together for years. Whether through joint children’s and youth tournaments, holiday camps or coaches’ meetings.

The team from the Regionalliga Nordost have had a turbulent last season. Head coach Michael Braune’s team struggled for a long time, especially in the first half, and only celebrated their first win on matchday 14. Before that, the team from the district of Teltow-Fläming had collected a meagre seven points in 13 games and consequently found themselves at the bottom of the table and in a relegation spot for a long time. A strong second half of the season, with 30 points, however, saw Luckenwalde finish in 13th place, and with it securing their place in the league.

FSV have not yet won any titles or trophies in their 60-year history, though they came close last June, losing 4-1 in the Brandenburg cup final to Energie Cottbus.

A highlight in the club’s history is certainly still 16 May, 2006, when FSV played a friendly against the German national team in the run-up to the home World Cup.
