Opposition Report: Athletic Bilbao

The Lions are based in the Basque Country. The eight-time Spanish champions have stuck true to their Basque DNA and recruit players from the region. While league titles have largely been held in Madrid and Barcelona, Bilbao have continued to hold their own and are one of the founding members of La Liga. Alongside the big two, they have never been relegated out of the top division.

Last season, Athletic Bilbao finished 10th in La Liga but achieved success in the Spanish Cup. They didn’t just knock out Real Madrid, but managed to beat Barcelona 3-2 in the final. Despite only being capped twice by the Spanish national team, Bilbao’s captain Iker Muniain is a player of real quality to watch. The 28-year-old has played 349 La Liga matches and 46 games in the UEFA Europa League for his local club.
