In the first competitive match of the 2024/25 season, 1. FC Union Berlin will face Regionalliga side Greifswalder FC in the first round of the DFB Pokal.

The opponents

Last season, Greifswalder FC narrowly missed out on direct promotion to Germany’s third-flight, the Regionalliga Nordost. In the end, GFC finished second with just a three-point gap to winners, Energie Cottbus. In the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state cup final, however, they beat TSG Neustrelitz 5-0 to secure their place in the first round.

Former Bundesliga player Nils Petersen, who played almost 300 first division games and won a silver medal with the German national team at the Olympics, drew the lots during today’s draw for the first round.

The first round of the DFB Pokal will take place from 16-19.08.2024 and on 27/28.08.2024 (for the clubs involved in the DFL Supercup), with the exact dates yet to be announced.

Further details will follow.
