No fewer than three VfB players started for Germany in the 2-1 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica with Alex Nübel, Maxi Mittelstädt and Deniz Undav. For Nübel it was his senior debut in German colours, Undav netted both goals in the space of six first-half minutes, and Mittelstädt set up the first. Angelo Stiller came on in the 67th minute and Chris Führich in the 82nd, but Jamie Leweling was an unused substitute.
“We were well aware that Bosnia have a strong team,” said a delighted Undav after the final whistle. “We managed to settle the game down with the two goals and comfortably see it out. Scoring goals is always nice, and it’s even better when you net twice and get the win.”
Two other VfB players on target in wins
The German U21 side, meanwhile, confirmed qualification for EURO 2025 with one match to spare courtesy of a 2-1 win over Bulgaria in Regensburg. VfB forward Nick Woltemade struck the winning goal with a penalty in the 86th minute, while Frans Krätzig didn’t feature.
France U21s also took a big step towards next summer’s tournament in Slovakia, winning 3-0 in Cyprus. Les Bleuets were captained by Enzo Millot, who also set up the opening goal from Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike with a great ball in behind and played until added time.
Friday was also a success for the only VfB player in action outside Europe. In qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations, El Bilal Touré scored the only goal for Mali in the 60th minute against Guinea-Bissau.
Making it a clean sweep, the German U20 side played on Friday too. Goalkeeper Dennis Seimen was not involved in the 3-1 win over Poland in the UEFA Elite League.
