Due to persistent inflammation in his back, Leonidas Stergiou has not yet been able to play a competitive match in a VfB shirt this season. After numerous individual sessions, the defender is now joining in with some parts of team training. “I’ve had to be patient recently, but I’m now over the moon that I’m back in team training,” he said, adding: “I’m feeling really good. Now it’s a case of waiting to see how the situation develops with the increasing workload. I hope to be able to return as soon as possible.”

For now, Stergiou must continue to cheer on his team-mates from the sidelines, as he will do for Saturday’s away match at Bayern Munich (kick-off 18:30 CEST). “Playing in Munich is always a big challenge but a few of our boys have already played pretty well there this week – maybe that will help,” commented the 22-year-old with a wink, referring to VfB colleagues Jamie Leweling, Angelo Stiller and Maxi Mittelstädt, who featured in Germany’s 1-0 victory over Netherlands at the Allianz Arena on Monday.
