Hiroki Ito is one of the constants in the VfB team. The left-footed defender is third behind Waldemar Anton and Wataru Endo when it comes to minutes this season. Having made 29 Bundesliga appearances in his debut campaign, the 23-year-old is already on 25 for this term.

In the 3-2 win at Bochum last Sunday, Ito was not only dependable at the back but also got on the scoresheet, putting VfB in front with a ferocious shot in the 14th minute. “I pushed up, then the ball came to the edge of the penalty area and I just hit it. It was certainly my most important goal to date,” the Japanese told VfB-TV.

“We’ve now won two games in a row, which allows us to look ahead positively,” he added. Ito and his teammates take on Borussia Dortmund at a sold-out Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday at 15:30 CEST. “It will be a difficult game but we have our fans behind us, who always give us a lot of energy.”
