The first piece of silverware up for grabs at the start of every season, the Supercup usually pits the Bundesliga champions against the winners of the DFB Cup. However, after Bayer 04 Leverkusen completed a domestic double with victory in Saturday’s DFB Cup final, Bundesliga runners-up VfB will take on the Werkself in the traditional curtain-raiser to the new campaign, which will also act as a dress rehearsal for the opening game of the Bundesliga season a week later. The game will take place on Saturday 17 August, with the venue, kick-off time and ticket information expected to be announced by the end of next week.
DFB Cup tie rescheduled
VfB’s participation in the Supercup means their DFB Cup first-round tie, which was due to take place that weekend, will be played on 27 or 28 August instead. The draw for the first round is being held this Saturday at 18:00 CEST.
