In his playing days, Tobias Werner made 127 appearances in the Bundesliga for FC Augsburg as well as a total of 150 appearances in Bundesliga 2 for FC Carl Zeiss Jena, Augsburg, 1. FC Nürnberg – and Stuttgart. The former winger was part of the VfB team that achieved immediate promotion back to the Bundesliga in the 2016/17 season. Since retiring in March 2019, he’s worked as sporting director at Carl Zeiss Jena and as managing director for sport at SSV Jahn Regensburg. Now he returns to VfB. In his new function, Werner has already travelled to the U21s’ training camp in Bludenz, Austria and met the team.
Board member for sport Fabian Wohlgemuth: “The target is clear: we want to become more efficient, in a sporting and financial sense, at the interface between the academy and the first team. The aim is to give as many players as possible from the club’s own youth system the prospect of a career in professional football – ideally, of course, at VfB Stuttgart. Tobias Werner has gained important experience as a player and as an official, which he will now apply in this role. He has our full support in this endeavour. We look forward to his return to VfB.”
Tobias Werner: “We want to focus more strongly on the individual development of our top talents in the transition stage, and do so continuously and not just during transfer windows. Working on this in our team in a concrete and measurable way is an exciting challenge, which I’m very much looking forward to.”
