Real Madrid is not only a big name, but possibly also the most attractive draw in European football. What makes the “mythic Real” so special?

Sami Khedira: “Real Madrid just set standards in every respect. Only the best players get the chance to wear the Real shirt – it’s been that way since Alfredo Di Stéfano. The club have won countless titles, been among the best in the world for decades and are record winners of the UEFA Champions League. You can’t get any better than that, it is a dream draw.”

You moved from Stuttgart to Madrid at the age of 23. What are your memories of playing at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu?

Sami Khedira: “The architecture alone is impressive. As a player, you look up at these steep stands and realise what an absolute gift it is to be able to play there. Added to that are the magic and history which the Bernabéu carries and which also oblige you.”

That sounds like big moments and emotions…

Sami Khedira: “Yes, definitely. For me, the Clásico games or the Champions League nights rank highest. There’s a special feeling in the stadium on those evenings. As a spectator you feel it just the same, it’s magical.”

As an opposing team, how do you survive in this stadium against Real, who are packed with top players?

Sami Khedira: “In my view, there’s only way: being brave! I know the Bernabéu as a Real player but also as an opponent with Juventus. As soon as the atmosphere and the whole crowd seem intimidating, you’ve lost. The key is to use the magic of the stadium, get into a flow and play with courage and concentration.”

Will you be at tomorrow’s Champions League match in Madrid?

Sami Khedira: “I travelled to Madrid a few days earlier for personal reasons. My main focus will be on sport and catching up with some of the people in charge. I’ll be attending the VfB welcome reception on Monday evening as well as the UEFA Youth League match between Stuttgart and Madrid. After that, I’m intrigued to see how VfB approach the task at the Bernabéu.”
