France, overseen by coach Thierry Henry, seized the initiative as early as the 12th minute when Enzo Millot scored the opening goal, drawing huge celebrations from the home crowd.

Yet Spain fought back quickly and held a 3-1 lead at the break thanks to efforts from Fermin (18’, 25’) and Alex Baena (28’). The game was far from over though, as France reduced the deficit via a Juan Miranda own goal (79’) before forcing extra time after Jean-Philippe Mateta converted from the penalty spot (90’+3). However, Spain had the final say as goals from Sergio Camello (100’, 120’) secured them the gold medal.

After the final whistle Millot, who was substituted off in the 78th minute for the tournament hosts, received a silver medal.
