After the 5-0 victory against VfL Bochum on Matchday 1, VfB won by the same scoreline in their second home game of the campaign. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side produced a stunning display as they overpowered Freiburg.

3-0 lead at half-time

The capacity crowd of 54,000 inside the MHPArena saw the hosts take the lead after just eight minutes through Chris Führich. Freiburg had no answer to VfB’s explosive attacks and a quickfire brace from Serhou Guirassy ensured a fully deserved 3-0 lead at the break.

No chance for Freiburg

VfB did not ease off in the second period either, continuing to play great combination football. When Führich made it 4-0 in the 62nd minute, the contest was over. Enzo Millot rounded off a brilliant afternoon in Stuttgart with a fifth goal in the 75th minute.

Goals

8th minute: Führich is released on the left by Angelo Stiller, dribbles into the penalty area and nets the opening goal.

17th minute: Guirassy fires home from Silas‘ pass to double VfB’s lead.

19th minute: Hiroki Ito with a good cross into the middle, and Guirassy is again on hand to turn it in.

62nd minute: Führich gets his brace! The winger runs onto Wooyeong Jeong’s pass and goes on a fine solo run into the box, beating two Freiburg defenders and slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.

75th minute: Maximilian Mittelstädt wins the ball and gives it to Guirassy, who lays it off to Atakan Karazor. He plays a through ball for Millot, who drives towards goal before coolly finding the net for 5-0. Incredible!

Reaction

Angelo Stiller: “It was fun to play in front of these fans. They pushed us right from the start. Before kick-off I couldn’t have imagined the game turning out the way it did today. We’ll enjoy the day and go at it again after the international break. We’re ready for more.”

Serhou Guirassy: “I’m pleased with my goals, but the most important thing is that the team is successful. I’m very happy here at VfB. We want to build on this win in our next games.”
