VfB goalkeeper Alexander Nübel has not made it through to the final squad for UEFA EURO 2024, with head coach Julian Nagelsmann announcing his decision ahead of the 2-1 friendly win over Greece on Friday evening. The three keepers for Germany at the tournament will be Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona) and Oliver Baumann (TSG Hoffenheim).

“Alex had an incredible season and played a key role in our success both on and off the pitch,” said VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth. “We knew that the squad was going to be reduced, and both we and Alex are aware that the decision to leave him out has nothing to do with his qualities as a player. He now has the opportunity to do exactly what is best for him physically and mentally to prepare for the coming season, which is set to be even more taxing than the last one with the extra competition that we are featuring in. Alex’s time will come with the national team – I have no doubt of that.”

VfB players Chris Führich, Maximilian Mittelstädt, Deniz Undav and Waldemar Anton all made the cut for the final squad, and are set to face Scotland in their opening group game (14 June, kick-off at 21:00 CEST at the Allianz Arena). After that, Germany will take on Hungary (19 June at 18:00 CEST at the MHP Arena) and Switzerland (23 June at 21:00 CEST at Deutsche Bank Park).
