“We’ve got to dust ourselves off quickly” | Mainz match reaction

Read all the reaction after our 2-0 loss against 1. FSV Mainz 05 here.

Marco Rose

  • “Congratulations to Mainz on their first win of the season. It was an avoidable loss. We played pretty well and were dominant, but we weren’t alert enough when it mattered. We weren’t good enough off the ball and didn’t defend well when they hit us on the counter. We had another go at things, but no luck.

It’s the second time that we’ve not brought enough to the table against teams that like to sit deep. We’ve got to hang in there and go back to our values.

I’ve been a coach for a long time. You go through phases like this. Like I said, we’re doing all the right things fundamentally, but we need to be more attacking. It mostly comes down to decision-making and making sure we score. I’ve got a lot of faith in the team. We’ve got the chance now to go to Belgrade and turn things around. There are some little things missing that have a big impact.”

Xaver Schlager

  • “That’s football. It’s the second time it’s happened to us this week and it’s hard to take. That being said, we’ve got to dust ourselves off quickly.

We didn’t do much wrong. We had a lot of possession and a few chances. The opposition had everyone behind the ball. We let them break away on the counter twice and they took their chances.“

Janis Blaswich

  • “We’re all disappointed and angry with ourselves. The important thing is that we can go over things and see where we can improve. Playing against teams that sit so deep isn’t easy. We tried to play the killer pass on a number of occasions in the first half. We’ve got to start making the right decisions on the pitch again.

Unfortunately, we let the opposition score. If things had gone like they normally do, it would’ve ended 0-0 today, even though that’s not what we wanted from the game. We’re not going to get too down, though. At the end of the day, we know how much quality we have.”
