Marco Rose
- “In Bochum you always expect a difficult away game with a lot of work to be done. A big compliment to VfL. That’s why I’m very happy about the victory, which, as expected, was hard-earned.
The initial phase reflects our situation this year to some extent. We get alone with the goalkeeper, but don’t score the goal. Then we get a free kick goal, where Bochum is a meter offside. But don’t blame the linesman because he thought the ball came from us. Then we scored a goal ourselves, which was just offside.
But the boys responded well. We were intense and aggressive and scored a nice goal through Dani Olmo before half-time.
Then the game was very open. And here it is always clear that whoever scores the next goal might even go home with three points. That was us today. We were given space and we made excellent use of it in those few minutes.”
DAVID RAUM
- “They repeatedly used long passes and aggressively went for the second ball. That presented us with a challenge, especially in the first half. However, we accepted the fight and scored great goals in the second half. We deserved the victory in the end.
The plan was to keep coming down Bochum’s right side. We should have taken the lead with Xavi‘s first chance , but we didn’t let our heads drop and got the reward for a hard-fought game. That gives us a lot of strength for Wednesday.”
XAVI
- “Today was an extremely important victory. The first two months of the year were extremely hard for us. We invested so much in every game, but couldn’t get the results. Today we’ve finally been rewarded for all the work.
“Now we need to stick with it and deliver week after week so that we can achieve our goals and qualify for the Champions League next year. Hopefully today’s win will give us enough tailwind for the tasks ahead.”
YUSSUF POULSEN
- “Overall, it was a good and deserved win today. Everyone did a very good job. We made the changes and scored three goals. The minutes immediately after a goal are especially important. That was the case today too. We had a few problems with that in the past.
Football is about winning and having fun. Every time I’m on the pitch I have fun. No matter whether it’s as a substitute or from the start.
We needed the three points today and we’re flying now with a good feeling to Madrid.”
ROUVEN SCHRÖDER
- “First of all, we’re happy that we won the game. I think it was well deserved in the end. Everyone has played against Bochum knows how tough it is here. VfL are incredibly difficult to play, especially at home. We knew that.
After going behind, it became doubly difficult. But we accepted it and scored the goals at the right time in the second half after the three substitutions. The momentum came from the bench today and it’s clear that we can use the counterattack well. We want to qualify for the Champions League again, to do that we have to win the games.
Today we took another step. Every game you win gives you a push with a view to Wednesday. If you lose 0-1 against Real Madrid, if you lose the first leg, and then go to the Bernabeu, nobody expects you to get a result. But we have a chance.”
