“The best feeling” | Peter Gulacsi on Euro 2024

One month to go!

The 17th European Football Championship will take place in Germany on 14 June. Peter Gulacsi (34) is fighting for the Henri Delaunay Cup for the third time in his career (2016, 2020). With Hungary, the 6’3″ goalkeeper from Budapest will also face the German national team (19 June at 6pm).

We spoke to Pete about the upcoming tournament.

Peter Gulacsi on…

… Hungary’s goals

  • “We want to play a strong tournament. What this is enough for in the end is a bit of a question. In recent years we’ve been able to cause some surprises, have shown solid performances and achieved unexpected results.

“We know that the top two and the four best third-place teams will advance to the next round. Therefore, our first goal must be to get the results to successfully pass the group phase. It would be a great story to advance to the knockout stages. But first of all, focus on the three group games and hope that there will be a fourth game.”

… Group opponnets Germany

  • “I have every faith in them. I know most of the players and have played against them several times. Germany have great quality. They’re individually top-class, are finding their flow more and more and are radiating a positive atmosphere again.

Julian Nagelsmann is an excellent coach. Little by little he managed to improve Germany’s philosophy and has made their style of play attractive again. That’s why I’m convinced that Germany will play a strong tournament.”

Peter Gulacsi on…

… his call-up

  • “Our Hungary manager messaged me. He then announced the official squad at the press conference. I was very happy. Traditionally, the phone call that’s famous in Germany doesn’t take place here.

“Basically, I expected this decision. Nevertheless, it’s always a wonderful feeling to be called up by Hungary and to now be taking part in my third European Championships. Now, of course, I have high hopes that we’ll play a good tournament.”

… the importance of playing for Hungary

  • “It means very, very much to me. As a footballer, it’s the highest feeling to play for your home country in a major tournament. That makes me extremely proud.

“I love travelling with the national team. I hope that together with our fans on site and also in Hungary we’ll experience a successful European Championship.”

… his personal “home Euros”

  • “It certainly feels a bit like a ‘home European Championship’ for me. I know the stadiums very well and have played in them several times. I’ve lived in Germany with my family for nine years. Of course, all of this makes it special for me.

“I’m very grateful to be able to play in Germany and enjoy the recognition of the fans. That means a lot to me. I hope that in a few years I’ll look back on this tournament with a smile.”
