My Game for My Country – with Benjamin Sesko

My game for my country!

At age 16, Benjamin Sesko (21)left his home country of Slovenia and found a new home in the Red Bull Academy in Salzburg. Even if saying goodbye was hard for him, his own expectations of his abilities grew stronger by the day. In the face of these challenges, the center forward grew a strong mentality that provides him with the support he needs during hard times.

In this video, Benjamin Sesko examines his past and dives into the Euros in Germany with the Slovenian National Team.

What is the philosophy behind the Slovenian National Team?

  • “Our greatest attribute is our counterattack. With it we’ve managed to score several times, as our results show. We also have the right players for it, but it helps that our defense is good. If we have confidence in ourselves, we can manage to play good football.

That’s why you can see in our past results we weren’t a team easy to face. I think that we can achieve something big during the Euros, because we don’t have too much pressure on us. We’re facing every match full of confidence and aiming to go beyond the group stage.”

Taking a look at your group rivals and the fact that Serbia is one of them catches the eye. Is that a special game for you?

  • “Of course, it’s a Balkan Derby. The game against Serbia will be exciting, because we’re located near each other. There will be plenty of fans there and it will be a great game.“

And then England for the final group match. What expectations do you have?

  • “It’s hard to prepare a match against a team like England, because they have an amazing quality level in each position. We have to play to use our skill to the fullest, hitting them on the counterattack for instance.

But yes, it will be an interesting game, because you can prove yourself against teams like these… There’s nothing to lose. I think every player in our team is looking forward to this game.“
