2-0! Silva and Openda Gift RB Leipzig Win Against Aston Villa

A strong performance!

Our players showed themselves in great form for the first of two friendlies scheduled as part of the US Tour

The Red Bull were the dominant side in this match against last season’s fourth-place of the Premier League, Aston Villa. Our head coach, Marco Rose, agrees this was a well-deserved win at the Red Bull Arena (Harrison, New Jersey)

Marco’s conclusions and other reactions to the win

The goals and an expulsion

Andre Silva and Lois Openda scored the two goals of the match. Aston Villa’s Diego Costa was sent off during the first half.

17th minute: Andre with the early lead

  • Our first goal in the USA! Doudou Haidara was wide awake and caught Aston Villa’s goalkeeper, Olsen off guard after a short kick, catching the ball just outside the opponent’s penalty area.

Our midfielder sprints his way into the box and notices André Silva dead center to goal. The Portuguese player does the honors and chips the 1-0 into the back of the net!

41st minute: Lois scored – Diego Carlos is sent off

  • It’s in! Lois Openda‘s first shot with a heel kick is parried by the keeper, but Gauci can’t react quickly enough to stop Lois’ follow-up. This nets the second and final goal of the match.

There comes the game’s ugliest scene: Villa’s defender Diego Carlos – who had already been shown a yellow card for misconduct – shoves Lois and is shown a second yellow card by the referee, sending him to the dressing room prematurely.

The Villans had to play the remainder of the match short-handed.

RBL kept dominating the match

  • After the break, both managers shuffled things up. Some of our younger players got playing time, aiding Leipzig’s dominance throughout the entire game.
  • Nach dem Seitenwechsel wechseln beide Trainer munter durch. Bei uns bekommen einige Nachwuchsspieler Einsatzzeiten. Die tonangebende Mannschaft kommt weiter aus Leipzig.

Good signs for the upcoming official matches:  Eljif Elmas (49.), Yussuf Poulsen (62.) and Benjamin Sesko (86.) went shy of turning this friendly into a goalfest for the Red Bulls. Thingds however ended in a satisfying 2-0 win for RBL. Starting things on the right foot!
