FCA defeat Leicester City 1-0
Deserved victory in friendly played in Kempten
FC Augsburg defeated newly-promoted Premier League side Leicester City 1-0 in Kempten in a friendly on Saturday afternoon. It was a deserved victory for Jess Thorup’s team.
Thorup’s side continued their pre-season preparations against the 2015/16 Premier League winners. His starting XI included goalkeeper Nediljko Labrović and Kristijan Jakić, while Dimitrios Giannoulis started down the left.
A sizeable crowd of 4,000 supporters were at the Illerstadion in Kempten and they saw FCA get off to a flying start. Arne Maier’s corner was headed in by Keven Schlotterbeck to give the Fuggerstädter an early lead (10’). Augsburg came close to doubling their advantage after 34 minutes, only for Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to make a brilliant save from Steve Mounié’s strike from just outside the box. His opposite number Labrović was comfortable with two shots from distance at the other end (29’, 42’).
Chances for a second goal
There were several changes for the second half: Elvis Rexhbecaj and Tim Breithaupt came on and the match ball changed too, but Thorup’s team remained on top with the official Bundesliga match ball. Fredrik Jensen had a shot blocked for a corner (54’), before substitute Henri Koudossou had a decent opportunity with 15 minutes to go. He was denied a goal by a clearance on the line from defender Conor Coady.
It ultimately remained 1-0 for Augsburg, and it was a deserved victory. FCA host French top-flight side Olympique Marseille next Saturday (10th August, 17:00 CEST) at the WWK Arena as part of the club’s family day.
