Ornstein confirms Real Madrid have agreed a deal ‘in excess of €100m’ for Dortmund’s Bellingham

Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have agreed ‘one of the highest-value transfers in the history of both clubs’ for Jude Bellingham, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

From homegrown hero with Birmingham to teenage star at German giants Borussia Dortmund, the 19-year-old midfielder’s inexorable rise shows few signs of abating.

There are few more exciting prospects in world football than Bellingham, who has already established himself as a key component for trophy-hungry England and was named Bundesliga Player of the Year after just missing out on the league title.

Bellingham has made more than 130 appearances since joining Dortmund from Birmingham for just over £20million three years ago.

And now it looks like he’s on the move again with Ornstein writing in The Athletic that Real Madrid have ‘reached an agreement’ with Dortmund to sign the England international.

Ornstein adds:

‘Madrid are set to pay Dortmund in excess of €100million (£86m; $107m) in what will be one of the highest-value transfers in the history of both clubs.

‘The deal is not yet signed but that is among the formalities that will follow. Bellingham, 19, is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days.’

Unlike Real Madrid, ‘have not submitted offers or provided financial numbers to Dortmund or Bellingham regarding a transfer fee or salary’.

Former Real Madrid and Liverpool winger Steve McManaman reckons Bellingham will “be treated like a King” if he completes a move to the Bernabeu.

Speaking last month, McManaman told BT Sport: “I think there’s something starry eyed about Madrid. The new stadium is going to be online as we all know, in the summer of next year.

“And Madrid have been accumulating younger players like Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga in the last couple of years.

“They’ve certainly got the money for Bellingham because since buying Eden Hazard in 2019 they haven’t really gone big and splashed the cash on huge signings.

“They’ve been selling fringe players and accumulating a pot of money to buy young players. They thought they were going to get Kylian Mbappe so the finances are there.

“If Jude does happen to sign for Madrid he will be treated like a King and it’ll be an exciting new phase for the club with the youngsters then taking over, although I think Luka Modric, Tony Kroos might all get new contracts even for just a year.

“They are building a new future and adding Bellingham to the young players they’ve already bought shows they’re doing excellent business.”
