Newcastle make contract ‘breakthrough’ to quash Liverpool links; announcement timeline revealed

Newcastle United have reportedly made a ‘breakthrough’ in contract talks with Bruno Guimaraes, which is great news for the St. James’ Park faithful.

The Brazilian midfielder has been one of the Magpies’ key players under Eddie Howe this term, who look set to secure a historic third-place finish.

Indeed, this is equally great news for Howe, who is looking to cement his team’s spot at the top of the Premier League.

Manchester United dropped three points against Brighton on Thursday, which has solidified Newcastle’s spot in third. As it stands, they are two points ahead of the Red Devils, with just five games remaining.

It has been a remarkable turnaround from the Magpies, who have gone from being relegation candidates to Champions League hopefuls under Howe.

As mentioned, Guimaraes has played a key role in this transformation. Since heading to St. James’ Park in January 2022, the Brazilian has made 52 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals and making six assists in the process.

His fine form has attracted interest from some top European clubs. Real Madrid have Guimaraes on their radar, too.

However, according to a report from Football Insider, Newcastle have made a ‘breakthrough’ in contract negotiations with the midfielder. If true, this will see Guimaraes commit his future to the Magpies for the foreseeable future.

The report claims fresh terms are ‘all wrapped up’ and will be announced once the season ends. While Guimaraes’ current deal expires in 2026, his new one will be designed to keep him in the North East until 2028.

Newcastle will also reward Guimaraes for his top performances since joining by handing him a pay rise.

He is currently the Magpies’s joint-highest earner alongside striker Alexander Isak, taking home £120,000 per week.

But, the new contract will make the all-action midfielder Newcastle’s outright highest earner.

Football Insider add that Howe has ‘no intention’ of letting Guimaraes leave, as the manager views him as ‘essential’ to their long term project.

Keeping their best players is, of course, just as important as new signings, so tying Guimaraes down to fresh terms is also a big step in the right direction.
