Newcastle are expected to be one of the favourites to sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo this summer, according to reports.
The Seagulls turned down hefty offers from Arsenal and Chelsea for their star man in the January window, so it is possible that the London rivals could also re-enter the race for the Ecuadorian’s signature.
Caicedo has been one of Brighton’s star players this season, with them currently flying under Roberto de Zerbi, sitting in seventh place in the Premier League table – nine points adrift from the top four.
Operating generally from a defensive midfield position, the 21-year-old has made 21 league appearances for the south coast club this term, scoring one goal and making one assist so far.
Caicedo has quickly gained a reputation as one of the best number sixes in the division, ranking in the top five of all Premier League players for tackles in the opposition’s half, so he is perfect for a high-pressing system.
He is also excellent on the ball, with his passing statistics also ranking among the very best in England. Also, considering he is still a youngster, his potential is sky-high.
As mentioned, Arsenal and Chelsea were heavily linked with a switch for Caicedo in January,
Caicedo then made his feelings regarding a departure very public, begging Brighton to allow him to leave in an Instagram post, as well as submitting a transfer request.
However, De Zerbi decided that he was too important a player to sell midseason, blocking the move. But, speculation regarding his future has never gone away, despite the midfielder penning a new contract at the Amex, in theory keeping him at the club until 2027.
But, this may have been mainly a financial move from Brighton, as his new deal will only increase his price tag this summer, should any club bid for him again.
Now, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror, Newcastle are the latest club to register an interest in Caicedo ahead of a potential summer approach.
They also add that a fee in excess of £90m would be required to convince Brighton to sell their star man, so the Magpies will have to put their money where their mouth is to get a deal over the line.
Along with Newcastle, the report also names Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool as clubs who could also make a move for Caicedo, so there could potentially be a bidding war for his services in the coming months.
The Tynesiders certainly have no shortage of transfer funds available to them, though, so there is a decent chance that Caicedo could head to St. James’ Park this summer if they can meet Brighton’s demands.
