Man Utd, Chelsea and Tottenham are all interested in signing Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who is open to a move this summer, according to reports.
The Argentine shot-stopper joined the Villans from for around £14million in 2020.
Martinez had spent over 10 years on Arsenal’s books before securing a move to Villa Park.
Game time came very rarely during his decade at the Emirates, however. Martinez was loaned out six times before sealing a permanent exit.
The 30-year-old did manage 38 first-team appearances for the Gunners and caught the attention of several clubs after he helped Mikel Arteta’s side win the FA Cup in 2019/20.
He made 23 of his 38 appearances for the London club that season following Bernd Leno’s injury against Brighton in June 2020.
Since joining Villa, Martinez has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.
His fine form for the Villans helped him become a regular for the Argentine national team and he played a massive part in their World Cup win last year.
Martinez has been linked with a move elsewhere for quite some time now and with several big clubs on the lookout for a new No. 1, rumours over his future do not seem to be going away.
The aforementioned Premier League trio are all expected to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, with Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag looking for some competition for , while Chelsea and Tottenham need to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga and Hugo Lloris, respectively.
Martinez would certainly be an upgrade on all three goalkeepers and a reputable journalist based in Argentina has said he is open to a move this summer.
Writing on Twitter, Gaston Edul has said ‘the idea is’ Martinez will be off at the end of the season.
Spurs have the most interest with Lloris out of contract at the end of 22/23.
Martinez’s departure this summer is ‘very likely’, though there is no mention of how much Aston Villa will ask for if they are open to letting the former Arsenal youngster leave.
Man Utd manager Ten Hag has been eager to extend De Gea’s contract for quite some time, with his current deal set to expire this summer.
The Spanish goalkeeper has been in the spotlight recently after he made a costly error in the Red Devils’ 1-0 defeat to West Ham last Sunday.
This has cast doubt over De Gea’s future at Old Trafford, with some reports saying Ten Hag is now considering signing a new No. 1.
Should Martinez be available for a decent price, the Dutch manager has to be all over this, but it is believed he will have to sell before he buys with the vast majority of his budget expected to go on a new striker.
It’s definitely not Golden Glove winner David Raya; he was barely tested in that Arsenal goal and has come up well short.
