Manchester United are concerned that plans to sign Napoli star Kim Min-jae could be scuppered by Harry Maguire not wanting to leave.
It’s no secret that Erik ten Hag wants to add another defender to his ranks this summer.
Man United have been heavily linked with a move for Min-jae after the South Korean defender has had an excellent season in Italy.
However, these plans could be put on ice as Maguire might be difficult to shift off the wage bill this summer.
As reported by 90min, Man United are becoming ‘concerned’ that their plans to sign the 26-year-old will be ‘scuppered’ by Maguire’s decision to stay.
While Tottenham are interested in signing Maguire,
Maguire doesn’t seem to be part of Ten Hag’s plans going forward, but he is still wanting to fight for his place next season.
This news will surely come as a frustration to Ten Hag as the Dutch boss is keen on revamping things at the back.
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have predominantly been the preferred defensive pairing under Ten Hag so far.
Victor Lindelof is also ahead of Maguire in the pecking order right now and
Maguire is contracted with Man United until 2025, with the option of a further year in his contract.
While he might be reluctant to give this contract up, he surely needs to be playing regular football to keep his place in the England set-up.
“Inevitably it’s not a situation that can continue for ever,” Southgate said back in May.
“It’s like Kalvin Phillips. They are important players for us and with Kalvin we haven’t got many players who can play as that single pivot.
“Of course the longer that situation goes on the more concerning it is and we’ve got, in Marc Guéhi, Lewis Dunk, Tyrone Mings, players who are playing well without the same experiences of club European football or international football. But we’ve got to keep searching for competition in that area of the pitch.”
It should be an interesting summer at Old Trafford and time will tell if Maguire’s reluctance to leave does indeed impact the deal for Min-jae.
