Manchester City ‘could sanction an exit’ for Aston Villa and West Ham United target Kalvin Phillips if they manage to sign Jude Bellingham this summer, according to a report.
Bellingham has been the subject of interest from a number of clubs for some time. That’s unsurprising, given at 19 years of age he’s become one of the best footballers in the world.
Borussia Dortmund have reaped the benefits of that, with the midfielder scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists this season.
Of late, it was reported the number of teams that could sign had Bellingham dropped. Indeed, he apparently ‘distanced himself’ from Real Madrid, while family members were ‘pressuring’ him to ‘try his luck in the Premier League’.
Advantage Liverpool and Man City, both of whom were named in that same report. Another potential destination has been weeded out, with the , according to another report.
While there’s still sure to be other teams in the mix – Manchester United have been linked – Man City seem to have a much better chance than they did a few weeks ago.
Whether or not they think they can land Bellingham is unclear. However, if they do, Football Insider reports they’ll have to make room by shipping out Phillips.
That report states they ‘could sanction an exit’ for the former Leeds United man ‘if they sign’ Bellingham. Indeed, he’ll ‘need to be sold’ due to Financial FairPlay regulations.
What’s more, it’s believed Pep Guardiola’s side are ‘pushing hard’ for Bellingham. And while surely any player could be sold, not just Phillips, it makes sense why it would be him that was sacrificed.
He’s a midfielder, and if Bellingham joins, they’ll need him even less than they do now, which is already not very much. Indeed, he was signed for around £45million in the summer and has played just 14 times.
Despite the lack of playing time, there are a few clubs interested in him. Aston Villa are said to be Leeds for him.
The Citizens would surely snap Villa’s hand off to receive that fee for a fringe player. Alongside the Midlanders, West Ham are in the mix, having , who will almost certainly leave this summer.
While the exit from City would be underwhelming for Phillips, he’d surely be able to bounce back at one of the aforementioned sides.
