Fuming Liverpool write to PGMOL over two contentious decisions that ended CL hopes

Liverpool were left fuming after two controversial decisions left their Champions League charge in tatters and have now written to the PGMOL requesting an explanation, according to reports.

The Reds were unhappy that Cody Gakpo had a goal ruled out for offside on Saturday , while they thought Tyrone Mings should’ve been sent off for a high challenge on the Dutchman.

Gakpo was left with stud marks on his torso and chest area but Mings was only given a yellow card for the tackle.

And now the Daily Telegraph claim that Liverpool have ‘written to the refereeing governing body to seek an explanation for the contentious decisions’.

The report adds: ‘A formal letter has been dispatched from Anfield to Professional Game Match Officials Limited to ask how and why such conclusions were reached given the video evidence available.’

Referee on the day, John Brooks, was asked to look at the pitchside monitor to make a decision on whether to rule a Gakpo goal out early in the second half.

Brooks ruled that Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa had unintentionally played the ball to Virgil van Dijk – who was in an offside position – in the build-up to the goal and therefore ruled the goal out.

Reacting to the offside decision, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp told reporters: “I asked the ref why the offside goal was offside, because offside situations should be clear but he explained it to me. He said it was a subjective decision.

“He thinks it is a not deliberate action from the defender, but I think it is. And I think the VAR wasn’t sure. So he maybe thought it’s possible.

“In the end it’s a subjective decision. You can’t argue with that. He made it and that’s it.”

Klopp was serving a touchline ban on Saturday but he was shocked that Mings wasn’t sent off despite his lofty view of the incident with Gakpo.

The Liverpool boss added: “I was (surprised). I am not sure if you saw Cody, but he looks sponsored by a very famous brand (Adidas). Three massive (marks). I didn’t see it back.

“I was probably too far away from that. I saw Cody only later when he showed it to me. You cannot do that without making a proper foul.”
