Chelsea told they must beat Man Utd to ‘game changing’ £90m signing; Boehly wants to get it done

Ex-Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has urged Chelsea to sign Joao Felix permanently this summer, amid growing interest from Manchester United.

The Portugal international has arguably been the Blues’ best attacking player in recent games, showing how important the Atletico Madrid loanee is to the team.

Felix recently penned a new contract with the Spanish club, but due to an allegedly poor relationship with manager Diego Simeone, a summer departure looks increasingly likely.

As reported by Football365 on Tuesday, , with Erik ten Hag allegedly impressed by his performances for Chelsea.

Felix got off to a ropey start with the Blues after receiving a red card on his debut against Fulham, but after returning from his three-match ban, he has looked sensational at times.

So far, in 10 Premier League outings for the London club, he has scored two goals and has generally looked like their most dangerous attacking player.

Indeed, in a disappointing season for their supporters, Felix has been one of the few positives.

The player attracted interest from around the Premier League when it became apparent that he would leave the Spanish capital.

However, Chelsea were the only club that were willing to pay Atletico’s £11m asking price to take him on loan, with Todd Boehly personally keen to get the deal done, according to various reports.

The Blues have spent a staggering £600m across the last two windows and Felix would likely cost around £90m, which would make complying with Financial Fair Play rules difficult.

But, with Manchester United now interested in signing Felix, Johnson says it’s vital that Chelsea beat them to his signature.

Speaking in a recent interview with Betfred, he said: “He’s certainly won me over more in the last few games.

“He showed against Liverpool that he’s clearly a class player and normally I don’t like to see clubs go all-out to sign one player, but João is a game-changer.

‘The need to sign him will be even greater if one of the club’s main rivals came in for him.

“I don’t like to see clubs break the bank for players and you should only do that if the player is going to be the last piece of the puzzle, but Chelsea’s team are miles away from that.

“In that sense, Joao is probably a luxury they don’t need, but as he’s currently at the club on loan and they have the opportunity to sign him, then they should do what they need to do to keep him, especially if a Premier League rival such as Manchester United come in for him.”
