Chelsea to sell five homegrown players in ‘brutal cull’ as Boehly looks to raise transfer funds

Chelsea are ready to sell five of their homegrown first-team players this summer in order to raise much-needed funds, according to reports.

The Blues have spent around £600m on transfer fees over the last couple of transfer windows with co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali not afraid of committing large sums on transfer fees.

It has been a disastrous first full season in charge for the duo with Chelsea guaranteed to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League even if they win their final match of the season against Newcastle.

Chelsea are currently on their third manager of the season .

Thomas Tuchel was sacked in September with Boehly appointing Graham Potter after he won just 12 of his 31 matches in charge.

Ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is set to be appointed ahead of next season with the Chelsea owners hoping to be in a position to back him in the summer transfer market.

Chelsea currently have a bloated squad with a number of players set to leave in the summer and talkSPORT claim that the Blues are ‘set to sell five homegrown stars this summer in a brutal cull of so-called standard bearers from their fabled youth academy’.

There have been widespread reports indicating Mason Mount is likely to leave the west London club in the summer with Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool all understood to be interested.

And talkSPORT add that the England international ‘could be followed out of the Stamford Bridge exit door by England pair Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek as well as Trevor Chalobah and Callum Hudson-Odoi.’

The Chelsea owners reckon ‘their British players will generate the most revenue while also dramatically slashing their wage bill’ and the Blues ‘need to raise funds from player sales to trim their bloated squad and finance’ summer bids.

They would probably raise more funds by selling Mount than any other player but former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has warned clubs that £85m is too much for the England international.

“If Chelsea’s reported valuation of £85m for Mason Mount is serious, I would certainly not be entertaining that if I was any of the clubs interested,” Collymore told Caught Offside.
