Peter Christiansen new managing director for sport

Peter Christiansen will take over as VfL Wolfsburg’s new managing director for sport on 1 July 2024 after the Wolves reached an agreement with the 49-year-old Dane’s current employers FC Copenhagen. Christiansen will be officially unveiled at a press conference in early July.

“We’re really pleased that we’ve been able to recruit Peter Christiansen, a proven football expert with an impressive CV,” said Frank Witter, chairman of the VfL supervisory board. “Work, football and passion were the exact qualities Peter stood for as a player, and they continue to set him apart now as managing director for sport. We’d like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for the trustful, fair discussions with FC Copenhagen’s representatives throughout this process.

“From July onwards, managing director for sport Peter Christiansen, along with sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz, will lay the necessary foundations at the club to enable our men’s team to achieve their sporting objectives again from next season onwards. He’ll also work with director of women’s football Ralf Kellermann to tackle the upcoming challenges regarding the squad and all other necessary infrastructural issues in order to continue VfL Women’s success.”

Before Christiansen became director of football at Copenhagen in April 2021, he enjoyed spells as sporting director at Aarhus GF and Randers FC, where the former defender had previously been employed as chief scout. During his three years in the Danish capital, Christiansen was involved in the transfers of Danish international striker Jonas Wind (2022) and Polish goalkeeper Kamil Grabara (2024) to VfL Wolfsburg. Copenhagen not only won the league and cup double in 2022/23, they also finished second behind FC Bayern Munich in the group stage of the Champions League before being knocked out by eventual winners Manchester City in the last 16. As a player, the former left-back spent five years in Copenhagen (2000-2005) and also played for Randers, Vejle BK and Swedish club Helsingborgs IF.

VfL Wolfsburg’s management board is now complete. From 1 July, it will be made up of Christiansen, Michael Meeske and Dr. Tim Schumacher.
