The Wolves made a winning start to their 2023/24 pre-season preparations thanks to a 4-0 success over a Beck’s XI, made up of local amateur players selected by readers of the AZ/WAZ newspaper. Mattias Svanberg (34’), Jonas Wind (39’), Bennit Bröger (62’) and Dzenan Pejcinovic (76’) got the goals for the Green-and-Whites at the Flutmulde Stadion in Gifhorn.
On Saturday 22 July the Wolves will face Bundesliga rivals SC Freiburg during their training camp in the Austrian town of Seefeld. Kick-off in Zams is at 14:00 CEST.
In the friendly, which rounded off the team’s first week back in training, head coach Niko Kovac was without U21 European Championship participants Kilian Fischer, Micky van de Ven, Bartol Franjic and Aster Vranckx, as well as Koen Casteels, Maxence Lacroix, Jakub Kaminski, Lukas Nmecha and summer signing Vaclav Cerny. The other new arrivals, Cedric Zesiger, Moritz Jenz and Tiago Tomas, all had their first outings in a VfL shirt.
VfL head coach Niko Kovac: “That was a good way to round off our first week of training. We’re at a completely different level now compared to where we were at the start of last season. The boys worked really well during the break, and you can see that in all of their test results. We’re on the right path and we’ve still got four more weeks in which we can keep developing a bit more.”
