Comfortable win

The new-look Wolves earned a 9-0 victory in their first friendly of their preparations for the 2024/25 campaign, beating a Beck’s XI selected by readers of the AZ/WAZ newspapers and comprising amateur players from around the Wolfsburg region.

Kilian Fischer scored a hat-trick on Saturday afternoon in Vorsfelde, with Jakub Kaminski, Jonathan Akaegbobi, Bennit Bröger and Kevin Behrens also on target before the break. Ridle Baku and Tiago Tomas added to the scoreline in the second half for the Green-and-Whites.

VfL will face a sterner test on Saturday 20 July when they travel to Belgian side RSC Anderlecht (kick-off: 13:00 CEST) in a game that will also be broadcast live by Wölfe TV.

VfL head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl: “I wanted us to play at a high tempo. That’s why I kept pushing the boys from the touchline. We weren’t very sharp today because the last few days have been very intense. The pitch was also quite deep. We wanted to create and convert chances, which worked well in the first half. We kept things simple in the first half, more so than we did in the second, which made it tough against an opponent like that. Ultimately, it was important that we moved well and got into a groove. Mohamed Amoura wasn’t involved today because he hasn’t done anything for two or three weeks, so we just managed his workload – we didn’t want to take any risks.”
