“Weren’t able to match the intensity of our opponents”

Ole Werner addresssing the team.

Head coach Ole Werner: “As a team, we collectively failed to show up for the first half. We could talk about the challenge success rate, the distance covered, the intensity and the number of mistakes when in possession. We made things extremely hard for ourselves when it came to getting the ball up the pitch. Instead, we just kicked the ball straight back to them. We weren’t able to match the intensity of our opponents. On the one hand, it was due to Gladbach wanting to show a reaction to their cup exit in midweek, and on the other, it was due to us forgetting how to play football after having a good chance just 30 seconds into the match. Gladbach were the better team and deservedly won tonight.”

Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football: “The first half wasn’t good and although it was a double game week and we didn’t have much time to train, there was nothing that hinted at something like this happening. We’re a solid team whenever we manage to play to our limits, as we’ve seen over the last weeks. In order for that to happen though, we need to always give it 100%, which we didn’t do today. We’re obviously disappointed at not having been able to do that. We will analyse this game in exactly the same way we do after positive results. I hope that we’re then able to show a reaction.”

“We managed to do everything wrong in the first half. ”

Marco Friedl: “We managed to do everything wrong in the first half. We knew that Gladbach would be on us from the start, especially following their cup exit in midweek. We’d prepared ourselves for that, but we didn’t manage to implement it. Overall, it’s disappointing because it could have given us even more confidence after the last weeks. There was nothing to be seen of how we’ve performed in recent weeks. It’s not possible to beat any opponent in the league if you’re not 100% present. We need to work as a team and deliver certain basics in every game. Otherwise, we won’t win at all.”

Marvin Ducksch: “We weren’t good tonight, from our attack to our defence. We’d set out to play much differently in the first half, but it ended up being catastrophic. We knew where we would be able to generate space, but were too slow and it just wasn’t how we wanted to play. We wanted to show a reaction during the second half and managed to create one or two good chances. It’s a disappointing defeat. We’ll stew over it tonight still, but then our focus will be on showing a reaction in our next game.”

Romano Schmid: “You need to give 100% and I’m shocked at how we played during the first half. We didn’t win any of our duels. We had no chance of winning any tackles, which is very upsetting. We need to be giving it 100% in every game and know that if we manage to play like we did against Leverkusen, that we’re capable of beating anyone. That wasn’t the case tonight.”
