“The performance of the team spoke volumes”

Head coach Ole Werner: “If you look at where we started from in the summer, it’s been a very good season. We would ideally have wanted to finish one place higher, but we would have needed a bit more consistency or to have found our way a bit earlier in the season. The atmosphere was perfect today. We already had goosebumps before the game and the crowd drove us forward during it. The performance of the team spoke volumes. The team and the fans deserved the 4-1 win today.”

Head of professional football Clemens Fritz: “Our team played brilliantly in a fantastic atmosphere. They believed that they could go all the way. It wasn’t in our hands though. We’ve always talked about wanting to improve, and you can see the improvement. I have to compliment the team. Seeing the double-winners and saying goodbye to three players and Frank Baumann made it a very emotional day. I have a lot to thank Frank for. He’s leaving a big gap at the club.”

Marco Friedl: “It’s great that I could help the team with a goal. We’ve played very well over the past few weeks and knew that certain results had to happen for us to get into Europe. We still played well though. We should have picked up the points we would have needed in previous games.”

Mitchell Weiser: “It’s been a good season, because we’ve taken a step forward from last term. We played our best football when we were under the most pressure. Now we’re left thinking about the games where we should have picked up more points. It’s definitely not due to what happened today. The atmosphere made me happy that I’ll be able to experience that even more now I’ve extended my contract.”

Marvin Ducksch: “We did what we had to do today, but the other results didn’t turn out as we wanted. However, we can still look back on a good season. We started the year well but we had a phase where we weren’t as good. You could tell again today that we need everyone on board. I’m proud of the team.”

We wanted to prove how much progress we’ve made and we can now head into the break feeling positive.

Anthony Jung: “We’re very happy with the season and are grateful for the fans’ fantastic support. We wanted to get the job done, and we definitely did. The fact that we’re disappointed is a good sign, because it shows that we had something worth fighting for. We wanted to prove how much progress we’ve made and we can now head into the break feeling positive.”

Romano Schmid: “With all due respect to Bochum, we could have scored around eight today, which is why it hurts that little bit more that we just missed out on finishing eighth. But we definitely didn’t back down today. I kept saying that I felt as though the fans were even closer to us this year, so I want to thank them for that and hit the ground running next season with them by our sides.”
