Line-up and formation: Head coach Ole Werner placed his faith in the same starting XI that registered a 2-1 win against VfB Stuttgart a week ago. Niklas Stark, who has been absent with an ankle injury recently, was back in the squad for the first time since matchday 25.
Werder’s starting XI: Zetterer – Jung, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Lynen, Schmid, Agu, Woltemade, Friedl.
Bench: Dos Santos Haesler, Deman, Stark, Kownacki, Malatini, Opitz, Groß.
Werder just lacking a goal
First-half highlights:
9th minute: The ball is in the back of the net! Mbabu turns the ball home from a corner, but the goal is disallowed due to a foul on Zetterer by Vargas in the build-up.
19th minute: Not far away! A Ducksch corner flies across the penalty area and almost finds its way into the far corner. Unfortunately, no Werder player is able to get on the end of Ducksch’s ball.
28th minute: Weiser finds space to play the ball through to Schmid in the penalty area. Werder’s number 20 turns and fires off a shot with his left foot, but the ball goes comfortably over the bar.
37th minute: Now the ball’s in the back of FCA’s net! Ducksch sends a free kick into the box, where Friedl heads home. However, the centre-back is clearly in an offside position, so the goal is ruled out.
45th minute: Ducksch puts a sharp ball into the box, where Schmid is just unable to get his head on the end of it. However, the ball keeps curling and goes just wide of the far post.
Schmid ice-cold, Ducksch shows his composure
Second-half highlights:
52nd minute: GOAAALLLL! Romano Schmid opens the scoring for SV Werder Bremen! Ducksch puts another dangerous cross into the box from a free kick, with Schmid losing his marker and slotting home with the inside of his foot at the back post on this occasion.
61st minute: GOAAALLL! Agu gets to the by-line, where the recently introduced Pfeiffer catches the left-back on his right foot. Referee Welz points to the spot. Dahmen gets his fingertips to Ducksch’s penalty, but there’s enough power on Ducksch’s effort to go over the line.
72nd minute: SVW have a big chance to extend their lead on the counterattack: Schmid carries the ball to the edge of the penalty area and squares it for Bittencourt. The ball eventually lands at Ducksch’s feet, but he fires over the bar from 12 yards.
77th minute: This would’ve been a serious Goal of the Month contender! Lynen almost lobs Dahmen from near the halfway line, but the goalkeeper gets back to keep the ball out.
90th minute: GOAL! The points are secure now. Weiser puts in a perfect cross for substitute Deman, who seals the win with a tidy header.
90+4th minute: Full time! Werder secure a 3-0 win in Augsburg thanks to a strong performance.
Summary: SV Werder started the game really well and repeatedly got into dangerous positions in the first half. However, the Green-Whites were just missing the necessary clinical touch in front of goal. However, SVW made up for this after the break from two set-piece situations. Subsequently, Werner’s side defended their lead well up until the final whistle and took another step towards securing survival. It was a really positive performance in Werder Bremen’s 1000th away game in the Bundesliga.
