“My inner child is over the moon”

Derrick Köhn in an interview.

WERDER.DE: Hi Derrick, welcome to Bremen! Does coming back to northern Germany feel like coming home for you?

Derrick Köhn: Yes, it does. I’m happy to be here and even happier to be back home.

WERDER.DE: You experienced a lot during your spell at Galatasaray and helped the side to win the Turkish championship and the Super Cup as a regular starter. Why did you decide to move to Bremen?

Derrick Köhn: I had a great time there and gathered a lot of experience. When I heard that Werder were interested in me, I wanted to make the deal happen no matter what, because it’s a great club with a lot of history. That’s why there wasn’t a doubt in my mind about coming back to northern Germany. I’m looking forward to wearing the famous green kit.

WERDER.DE: In Germany, you impressed in the 2. Bundesliga and the 3. Liga during your spells at Bayern München II and Hannover 96, respectively. Was it one of your childhood dreams to make your debut in the Bundesliga?

Derrick Köhn: One of my childhood dreams came true last week when I played in the Champions League for Galatasaray. Now, it’s nice to be able to fulfil my dream of playing in the Bundesliga. It’s been a fantastic couple of weeks. My inner child is over the moon!

WERDER.DE: How would you describe your style of play?

Derrick Köhn: I like to defend, but I also like getting up the pitch and chipping in offensively. Scoring goals and getting assists are also big parts of my game. I’m an athletic player who’s quick, loves playing football and dribbles a lot.

WERDER.DE: Recently, you’ve been playing on the left side of a back four with Galatasaray. You might get the chance to be more involved at the other end of the pitch for Werder. Does that play to your strengths?

Derrick Köhn: I think it suits me. I played in that role at Hannover and I felt comfortable. On the left, I can be the true Derrick that I see in myself.

WERDER.DE: You played nine games alongside Marco Friedl for FC Bayern’s second team.

Derrick Köhn: That’s right – it was a while ago. I’m looking forward to seeing him again and playing alongside him here.

Werder Bremen have definitely got a lot of potential that we want to exploit.

WERDER.DE: You wore the number 18 at Hannover and 17 for Galatasaray. It is the natural progression that you’re the number 19 at Werder?

Derrick Köhn: You could say that (laughs). I think it’s a good order. I’m very happy with the number 19, since I wore it a few times at youth level.

WERDER.DE: What are your aims at Werder for this season?

Derrick Köhn: I want to bring my strengths to the table and have a good season with the team. Werder Bremen have definitely got a lot of potential that we want to exploit. We want to make the fans happy and then go from there.

WERDER.DE: Derrick, thank you for talking to us!
