Line-up and formation: Ole Werner opted to stick with the exact same starting XI as the one that beat Augsburg last weekend, which saw the Green-Whites set up in a 3-4-3 formation with Ducksch spearheading the attack. Stage started on the bench after completing hid red card suspension, alongside youngster Isak Hansen-Aarøen.

Werder’s starting XI: Zetterer – Veljkovic, Friedl, Jung – Weiser, Agu, Bittencourt, Lynen – Schmid, Woltemade, Ducksch

Bench: Dos Santos Haesler, Deman, Stark, Stage, Kownacki, Hansen-Aarøen, Malatini, Opitz, Groß

Just in the nick of time!

First-half highlights:

8th minute: Reitz opens the scoring for the Foals. The youngster plays Hack through on goal, who keeps his nerve and slots the ball into the right corner from inside the penalty area.

11th minute: Kone breaks down the left. The Frenchman gets to the by-line and unleashes an effort from a tight angle, but Zetterer denies him with a near-post save.

12th minute: Itakura rises high and gets his head on a Gladbach corner, but Zetterer keeps his effort out with an outstanding save.

21st minute: Following a cross from the left-hand side, Agu is able to cut the ball back in the penalty area. Woltemade reaches the ball first, but it gets away from him.

36th minute: Schmid breaks into the box on the left and plays a wonderful cross to Ducksch. The attacker looks poised to head home from six yards, but he misses the ball entirely as the chance goes begging.

45th minute: Equaliser for the Green-Whites! Werder find their way into the box after combining well down the right-hand side, and Bittencourt cuts the ball back to the six-yard line, where Woltemade finds the corner with his shot to secure his first Bundesliga goal.

Heartbreak in the dying seconds

Second-half highlights:

65th minute: It’s Woltemade again! Ducksch delivers a corner into the penalty area, which sees the youngster spring highest and head home his second of the game!

69th minute: Zetterer comes to Werder’s rescue once again. Gladbach’s Scally puts in a picture-perfect cross from the left, which Reitz heads in the direction of SVW’s net, but Zetterer leaps into action and punches the ball away from the top corner.

82nd minute: Weiser drives into the box and slides a pass through to the back post, where Ducksch is waiting to pull the trigger, but his effort hits the side netting.

90th minute +1: Gutting. Borussia score a last-gasp equaliser. The referee consults with VAR following a Friedl handball in the box, which sees the decision go in Gladbach’s favour and the side are awarded a penalty. Neuhaus steps up and keeps his cool, powering it down the middle.

90th minute +5: Full-time. SVW and BMG share the points on matchday 32.

Summary: It’s difficult to decide whether Werder should view the result as positive for picking up a point, or negative for dropping two. The hosts put in a strong performance throughout the 90 minutes and took control of the game, particularly after conceding the first goal. Alas, Gladbach’s last-minute equaliser in the dying seconds certainly succeeded in raining on the Green-Whites’ parade.
