“I picked something up from him”

Romano Schmid returned to Bremen with six points from two games from the recent international break. Austria defeated Kazakhstan 4-0 and Norway 5-1, allowing the midfielder to return to Germany full of confidence as he was back in team training on Thursday. “I will obviously look to build on those games, as I would if I played well for Werder and was then away with Austria,” said the 24-year-old.

Schmid’s two assists were from corners, assisting Philipp Lienhart against both Kazakhstan and Norway. The midfielder revealed whether or not it was planned or just a coincidence: “I couldn’t find anyone with my corners in training beforehand, but then they led to two goals in the two matches. That’s just how it goes sometimes (laughs). ‘Lieni’ timed his powerful jumps perfectly. There was a similar opportunity at EURO 2024 against Turkey when he headed my corner just over the bar. It worked perfectly this time around.”
