“Didn’t have that little bit of luck”

Assistant coach Patrick Kohlmann: “It’s frustrating that their first two goals came from set pieces that we’d managed to clear. We gave our absolute all, but didn’t have that little bit of luck at the crucial moments. The offside goal could’ve turned the game around, but the game was over after their third goal, even if we kept trying to get one back right until the end. At the end of the day, we deserved to lose against a very strong team, who are clearly top of the table for a reason.”

Head of professional football Clemens Fritz: “We did well out of possession and created chances going forward. It was just the final pass that was missing – you obviously have to get that right against good teams if you want to stand a chance. Conceding the first goal unsettled us and we needed time to get back on our feet. We have to play the way we did later on in the game right up to the final whistle, which we failed to do today.”

Marco Friedl: “We needed things to go our way today. We should’ve played with the courage we showed in the second half from the outset. We were our own worst enemies today. The bottom line is that Leverkusen were just too good for us on the day.”

Michael Zetterer: “It was clear to us that we were going to need a bit of luck if we wanted to come away from a game against such a quality side with any points. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the rub of the green at key moments. As a result, Leverkusen were just too much for us to handle today.”

Mitchell Weiser: “We took too long to implement our game plan today. We knew that Leverkusen were going to dominate possession and that we’d have to use the ball effectively when we had it. We were more composed in the second half and managed to carve out some chances. We’d been giving the ball away too easily prior to that – we shouldn’t be conceding goals like that.”
