Cross, header, goal

Werder scored a league-best eleven goals from crosses in the 2023/24 campaign, six of which were delivered by none other than Mitchell Weiser. SVW’s number 8 had a hand in his first goal on Matchday 3 against Mainz, when the winger found Jens Stage in the middle to nod home Werder’s second of the game. In the end, the Green-Whites were able to put four past the 05ers, picking up their first three points of the season as a result after two previous defeats on the trot. The Dane successfully got on the end of three crosses throughout the campaign, trumping all the other Green-Whites in this regard.

Weiser stepped up the plate once again in the 1000th away match in Werder’s history at the WWK Arena, delivering a picture-perfect cross into the path of Olivier Deman, who ran onto the ball and headed home the Green-Whites’ third of the day.

Werder bagged the second-highest number of goals from headers in the season just passed (14), with only FC Bayern scoring more. Weiser was, once again, able to take some credit for this, with five of his seven assists throughout the campaign being for his teammates to nod into the opposition net. In total, nine different Green-Whites scored a header during the 23/24 campaign.

Weiser and Deman – A deadly duo

Werder’s number 8 and 2 are a force to be reckoned with when they combine on the pitch, which is clear to see in that three of SVW’s goals last season came from a Weiser cross into Deman in the middle. In fact, the winger had a hand in both of the Belgian’s two goals from the 23/24 campaign . “When Mitch has the ball, I know exactly what he’s going to do with it and where it will end up,” shared Deman following the 3-0 victory over FC Augsburg.

The Green-Whites are certainly experts when it comes to scoring headers. As a matter of fact, SVW netted twelve goals in this manner during the 2022/23 season, the second-highest number after 1. FC Union Berlin. This trend will likely carry into the upcoming campaign, particularly now that Mitchell Weiser has extended his contract and will continue to tee up his teammates for the foreseeable future.
