Full-back Julian Ryerson is leaving 1. FC Union Berlin for the Ruhr, with the 25-year-old moving with immediate effect to Borussia Dortmund.
Ryerson joined Union from Viking Stavanger at the age of 20, and played 109 games for Union, developing into a senior international for his home country Norway over the period.
In the service of the team, in the hearts of the fans
Shortly after his transfer to Union, it was clear how much potential the young full-back from Lyngdal had. In his first season, which saw Union promoted, he was rarely used, but he was ready when needed, as seen when called upon for the decisive relegation second leg against VfB Stuttgart.
After promotion to the Bundesliga, things went from strength to strength for Ryerson. His bravery in the tackle, his technical ability and his enthusiasm for the ball were rewarded with increasing appearances, and he often starred in games. The 25-year-old had, alongside Rani Khedira, become Union’s vice-captain this season.
But after 109 games in red and white, a new challenge now awaits.
The views on the change
“The club, the team, and the whole Union family always welcomed me warmly from the very beginning and that helped me a lot,” said Ryerson, upon his exit. “I’ve had an incredible four and a half years in which I’ve also been able to develop personally. I’ll never forget promotion and qualifying for the Conference and Europa League, and of course I’ll always remember my goal against Haifa. I thank you all for the fantastic support and wish the whole club only the best.”
“Julian has continued to developed during his time with us,” continued Oliver Ruhnert, director of professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin. “We are proud that Union have been able to play a part in Julian’s development, and we regret that he is now leaving us. We wish him every success in Dortmund both on and off the pitch.”
