Ahead of tonight’s UEFA Europa Conference League Group E match against Maccabi Haifa, a delegation from 1. FC Union Berlin, led by president Dirk Zingler, have visited the Yad Vashem International Holocaust Memorial.

Union laid a wreath at the Memorial and were accompanied by a representative of the Israeli Embassy in Berlin.

“It was a deep desire for us to use our official trip to Israel to visit this special place and I’m very grateful that we were able to be here,” expressed Zingler.

“Anti-Semitism is unfortunately still present in our society and we are all called upon to fight it consistently. I’m sure that football, with its cultural diversity, can serve as a role model to promote tolerance and oppose any form of hostility towards other people and discrimination.”

“To be confronted here today with Nazi Germany’s atrocities against the Jews of Europe so directly makes us stunned and sad. We take with us impressions that will occupy us for a long time and that none of us will forget. Our generation is not responsible for these acts. But we must learn from history and bear the responsibility today and in the future to ensure that it is not repeated.”
