A crowd of over 50,000 in Cologne witnessed an intense contest from the start, in which Sebastian Hoeneß’ side had the better of the play and the first chance. Top goalscorer Serhou Guirassy had no luck this time, though, with his header crashing against the bar from a corner.
Hiroki Ito then had a long-range effort saved by Köln goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe (23’), while at the other end, Alexander Nübel made a great stop from Dejan Ljubicic’s shot (31’). As a result, the first half ended goalless.
Undav at the double
VfB were more clinical with their chances in the second half. Deniz Undav, on as a substitute in the 62nd minute, struck in the 68th and 88th minutes to earn VfB a deserved away victory, which lifts them to second place in the table.
The goals
68th minute: On the counter, Chris Führich sends the ball into the middle to Undav, who nets the opener from nine metres.
88th minute: A shot by Silas rebounds back off the post to Undav, who makes it 2-0.
Reaction
VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “It was a tight, intensive and tough match – as we expected it to be. We controlled the game at times but lacked the necessary incision in the final third. Our pressing wasn’t good in the first half either. Having said that, we defended as a unit, produced a terrific team performance and then scored the important opening goal. Our second goal killed the game off and we’re going home as deserved winners.”
Deniz Undav: “It was a special moment for me to get my first goals in the Bundesliga. I’ve finally managed it. But it’s more important that we took all three points. I couldn’t be happier today.”
