The second round of the DFB Cup sees VfB Stuttgart at home to an 1. FC Union Berlin side whom they beat 3-0 just a week-and-a half ago at the An der Alten Försterei stadium in the country’s capital. Sebastian Hoeneß, however, was urging caution ahead of this re-match, saying: “they’re a really good team, and last season they qualified for the Champions League. In the current situation, they’re going to be doing all they can to get any kind of success, and that makes them dangerous.”
“It’s a different competition as well,” the VfB coach added “Tomorrow, we’ll find out who’s making it through to the next round. We’ll be going out there with plenty of confidence though, and we’re convinced we’ll make it through.“
Hoeneß is also looking forward to the atmosphere at the match, which will be played under floodlights. “It tells you everything you need to know that the MHPArena is sold out for a Tuesday night,” he said. “I get goosebumps just thinking back to the tifo that the fans produced before the match at home to Hoffenheim. The stadium will be on fire and we look forward to the support that they’ll give us. Our cup run last year showed how much fun you can have in this competition.”
The coach will have the same group to choose from as for the TSG Hoffenheim match, with Josha Vagnoman also getting back into full training with the team this week. “It’s looking really good with Josha – he’ll have some more scans today to check and make sure that everything’s OK,” Hoeneß said, before adding that he “won’t be rotating the squad all that much. I’ll just have to work out which players can and will play three matches in the space of the week, and which ones won’t.”
