The crowd at the Stadion an der Alten Forsterei witnessed an intensive first half in which  both teams thundered into the challenges. As the two sides were also defensively solid, there were few goalscoring chances to speak of.

Guirassy with the opener

Union’s rearguard suffered a lapse in concentration in the 16th minute, though, allowing Serhou Guirassy to head in Anthony Rouault’s cross and give Sebastian Hoeneß’ charges a 1-0 half-time lead. The scorer was later substituted off in the 30th minute with a thigh strain and was replaced by Deniz Undav.

Decisive second half

VfB controlled the majority of the second period and eventually put the game to bed thanks to two counter-attacks: Silas added to the scoreline in the 81st minute before Undav sealed the win in the 88th minute.

Goals

16th minute: Rouault’s brilliant cross finds Guirassy, who heads VfB 1-0 up.

81st minute: Following a swift break, Silas makes it 2-0 for the visitors.

88th minute: Wooyeong Jeong crosses into the middle for Undav, who heads in VfB’s decisive third of the game.

Reaction

VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “We produced a mature performance, and we played in a very mature way. Union’s periods of pressure were never too intense. I’m proud of the way we won the game by such a margin in the end. We’re on a run at the moment and we want to keep it going for as long as possible.”
