Dan-Axel Zagadou’s stats against 1. FC Union Berlin in the DFB Cup on Tuesday speak for themselves. The Frenchman had 107 touches of the ball – more than any other VfB player – won 78 per cent of his challenges and 88 per cent of his aerial duels, thereby playing a major role in helping Stuttgart into the last 16 of the competition. “It was a difficult game. We won in the end, so everything’s perfect,” said the 24-year-old, who feels the team’s togetherness was a key factor in their success. “We all have the same focus, we want to be well organised defensively and not concede any goals, if possible. Everyone’s playing their part.”

Sebastian Hoeneß’s team will hope to demonstrate that togetherness once again when they travel to 1. FC Heidenheim on Sunday (kick-off 17:30 CET). “Heidenheim have done very well so far,” continued the centre-back. “They play in a smaller stadium where you’re close to the fans. The atmosphere is going to be good and I’m looking forward to it.”

The aim against the 2022/23 Bundesliga 2 champions is clear. “We dropped three points against Hoffenheim last time out – we want to get those points back,” said Zagadou. “A win would be important. We’ll fight together to bring the three points back to Stuttgart.”
