Sebastian Hoeneß’s team continued their impressive run of form right through to the last game of the calendar year and picked up a well-deserved 3-0 win at home to FC Augsburg.
2-0 up at the break
Stuttgart dictated play from the off against a defensively-minded Augsburg side at the MHPArena and piled on the pressure in front of their home fans. The lads from Cannstatt were solid in defence and clinical up front, with goals from Deniz Undav (18‘) and Serhou Guirassy (45‘+1) giving them a 2-0 lead at half-time, the scoreline far from flattering the home team.
Führich puts the result beyond doubt
Augsburg put up more of a fight in the second half, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Chris Führich made it 3-0 in the 69th minute, icing the result and securing the three points for VfB Stuttgart, who go into the winter break in third place in the Bundesliga.
Goals
18th minute: A corner from Angelo Stiller finds Undav who fires home the all-important opening goal from close range.
45th minute +1: Undav recovers a goal-kick from the Augsburg keeper and feeds Guirassy, who does the rest himself and doubles the lead.
69th minute: An incredible pass from Angelo Stiller finds Führich in the box, and he volleys home to make it 3-0.
Reaction
Sebastian Hoeneß: “This was a great match from us and the support from our fans was absolutely sensational. On behalf of the team, I’d like to thank the fans and now it’s time to look forward to Christmas.”
